not for me... I'm good, which is kind of the point actually.

See, I was invited to join a friend's Facebook group for insecure writer...Collapse )

I'm down to the last few 'tasks' in writing my mystery novel... reviewing the ending, grammar edits, polish... and the opening. I'm really worried about my opening. (Which has changed since you readers read ;)

So I was wondering if y'all could hit me with your favorite starting paragraphs. Bonus points if it's a mystery...

thank you.

gimme some backstory

Feb. 17th, 2014 | 11:19 am

I clearly have enough thoughts and feels about Arrow that they're spilling out all over. So I'm going to move some specific thoughts over here...

I don't love Felicity. I don't hate her. I don't hate her with Oliver despite preferring him with Sara right now.

But Felicity is lacking something pretty important for me. Fullness, depth, darkness, backstory... It's one of the things I have discovered over the years is really important for me to latch onto a character in a major and emotional way.

So... what would you like Felicity's backstory to be? What do you think it will be?

I'll go first...

I did a little research on the origins of Felicity Smoak as a DC character since I'd heard the name had been used before and found this. Now clearly our Felicity isn't anyone's mother or step-mother if you want to be accurate, but what if she were the daughter or step-daughter of a superhero like Firestorm (and no, I don't have any idea who that is)? But what if that's why she's so accepting of Oliver's vigilante-ism and dual identity? Certainly a good reason to be secretive about her past and a computer genius!

I don't really think this is what they will do, but I'd kind of love it.

Now you!

top five meme

Feb. 11th, 2014 | 03:34 pm

Ask me my Top Five Whatevers. Fannish or otherwise. Any top fives. Doesn't matter what, really! Fandoms, ice cream flavours, cartoon moments, women in my fandoms, OTPs, ideal holiday destinations, goals for the future, celebrity crushes, etc.

the capsule wardrobe

Jan. 16th, 2014 | 10:13 am

I read this: http://www.xojane.com/clothes/project-33-capsule-wardrobe last week and I've been thinking about it ever since. I've been working to clean up and declutter my house. An uphill battle since no one else seems really interested in my resolution to put the house in physical order... But one of the things I did in my declutter was actually take the bags of 'to donate' clothes from the bottom of my closet and donate them.

I keep coming back to this streamline wardrobe idea. While I own a ton of clothing, I really wear very little and am endless frustrated by the clothes that just sit.

Now, I could never get down to 33 items, especially if it was supposed to include shoes and accessories. I mean, that's madness. But I wouldn't mind paring down. Just trying to figure out how to do it.

after the cold readers...

Jan. 10th, 2014 | 07:26 pm

hey everybody out there who's edited from cold reader comments. I have a question...

How did you start?

I know exactly what I need to do and it's simple enough. I just have no idea what to do first or if it's possible to do more than one thing at a time.

So what did you do?

Agents of SHIELD; thoughts, theories and fixes

Jan. 8th, 2014 | 09:27 pm

I want to like SHIELD. And sometimes I really do. It’s just…

It has managed to combine the Whedon patented slow start with network sci-fi phobia and a lack of overt direction or long story, which is pretty much the thing Whedon does best.

The good…

Agent May. I love Ming-Na, and actor love goes a long way with me. I just want more of her. More. MORE. MORE!

FitzSimmons. I don’t ship them, but I love them. In fact the more Fitz and/or Simmons the more likely I am to like the episode.

Ward. He’s a little bland, but I like him. I like him and Jemma. He could use some major backstory. But so does everybody, really.

The bad…
Maybe not that bad but...Collapse )

The ugly… Or my potentially unpopular opinion.
This really isn’t quite a scandalous as I make it out to be. Well, on the surface it is maybe, but I’ve thought this since the beginning so here goes…
We need less...Collapse )

So there you go. My feelings on SHIELD.

trying my hand at this meta-stuff. (or tv thoughts I've been meaning to post forever)

Dec. 10th, 2013 | 12:27 pm

Or one why through two and a half seasons, The Good Wife is darned close to perfect. Well one reason… One of the reasons… The rhythm of TV seasons or my theory on them anyway…

I have this theory is that there are things you can only do during certain seasons. Or more that each season needs to have its own flavor or motion in order for a series to be successful.

See, in the first season...Collapse )

quick question...

Dec. 8th, 2013 | 11:01 am

and it's so silly I'm going to post it here instead of writeandgripe...

For those of you how set work count goal, how do you do that?

And by that I mean, how do you know what a reasonable goal is? And how do you make yourself stick to them? I have a really bad habit of stopping when I get to a natural pause instead of pushing through. I'd like to try to more consistently fight that urge because when I can push through I not only write more I feel much more accomplished. Having work count goals, that I stick to might help this.

Also, what do you do if you're not making your goals? One of the reasons I steer clear of word count goals is the frustration of not hitting them
